Basil is native to India. It is half hardy annual plant, best known as culinary herb , It grows up to 110cm tall with light green silky leaves, flowers are small white in color, leaves have a strong pungent , sweet smell . Basil, Thai Basil, or sweet basil is a common name for culinary herb ocimum basilicum. It is sensitive to cold & grows best in hot & dry conditions. It grows best outdoors but can be grown in indoor too. It should be kept away from extreme cold conditions and grows best in sunlight.
Basil can also be planted from cutting with stem, once the plant is allowed to flower, it produces seed pods containing black seeds, which can be saved and planted following years. Picking leaves off plant helps promotes growth. Most Asian basils have clove like flavor. The most notable is Holy Basil or Tulsi grown in India& Nepal. Lemon basil has a strong lemony smell & flavor because of presence of citral. Basil is commonly used fresh in cooked spices because if cooked it loses its flavor. When basil leaves are soaked in water it become gelatinous& is used in Asian drinks. Leaves & seeds of the basil plants are important medicinal parts of the herb used in cuisines.
Basil oil is obtained by steam distillation of leaves, flowers and buds of basil plant.
It is used for culinary purposes.

Chemical constituents of basil oil are Alpha pinene, Beta pinene, Camphene, myrcene, cis ocimene, camphor, limonene, linalool, methyl chavicol, citronellol, y terpineol, geraniol, methyl cinamate and eugenol.
All essential oils blends with each other, basil oil also blends with verbena, neroli, marjoram, lemon, lavender, grapefruit, ginger, fennel, cedarwood, black pepper & bergamot.
SAFETY & PRECAUTIONS
Eye Contact: If basil oil comes in contact with eye, wash eye with plenty of water till 15 minutes, remove contact lances. If serious condition then call doctor immediately it may be dangerous.
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothes and footwear if basil oil comes in contact with skin, Wash thoroughly with fresh water at least 15 minutes. Contact a doctor immediately if irritations persist.
Inhalation: If basil oil is inhaled in high conc. Take the person to fresh air, if serious condition then provides artificial respiration call the physician immediately.
STORAGE & HANDELING
Keep the drum in cool and dark place temperature below 25°.
Basil oil should not use in excess. Its use should be avoided during pregnancy and by children below age 16 years.
