Pomegranate is a small tree or shrub growing up to 10m tall, it has spiny branches & is extremely long lived. Leaves are opposite, flowers are bright red. The edible fruit is berry; no. of seeds can vary from 200 to 1400 seeds. The seeds are embedded in white, spongy astringent membrane.
There are two varieties of Pomegranate one is p.granatum & other is socotran pomegranate only difference in both varieties is that socrotan has pink flowers & smaller & less sweet fruit.
P. Granatum is grown for its fruit crop & as ornamental trees & shrubs in parks & garden. Its botanical name is punica granatu, & is considered to have originated in the region between Himalayas & Egypt.
It is extracted by cold pressing of seeds.
Pomegranate oil is colorless to pale yellow in color.
Pomegranate seed oil has various chemical compounds that include Punicic acids, oleic acid, Linolenic acid, Palmitic acid etc. In which the Punicic acids about is about 80%.
